On a crisp Saturday morning in Crystal, Minnesota, we set off on our adventure. Our destination? Sandusky, Ohio, where my cousin had invited us for a late Thanksgiving dinner. With temperatures in the single digits, the chill was in the air—but so was our excitement.
Before Takeoff:
I carefully reviewed our flight plan. Thanks to strong tailwinds (winds that help push the plane along), our flight to Erie-Ottawa International Airport was expected to be direct and smooth.
Mid-Flight Surprises and a Necessary Pit Stop
The 4-hour flight offered clear blue skies and breathtaking views. However, not everything went as planned:
- Fuel Gauge Confusion:
Halfway through the trip, our digital fuel measurement system suddenly showed fuel burn three times higher than expected! Thankfully, the old-school analog gauges reassured me that we had enough fuel. Still, caution won out, and we decided to make an unscheduled stop at Plymouth Municipal Airport in Indiana. - A Quick Break:
At the small airport, we refueled, took a much-needed restroom break, and even snapped a few pictures of the charming FBO (Fixed Base Operator—a service facility for pilots).
- An Unexpected Guest:
As we prepared to leave, a Citation jet (a type of small business jet) landed on the same runway. We had to wait for it to clear before taking off again—a reminder that flying always has its surprises!
After our stop, we continued to Ohio. The landing was smooth, and my cousin was waiting to whisk us away for a delightful family dinner.
Return Journey: Battling Winter Weather
Refreshed from Thanksgiving festivities, it was time to head home. However, the return trip promised its own set of challenges.
Weather Takes a Turn:
Just as we prepared for departure, a sudden snow shower and low clouds forced us to delay our takeoff. Soon after getting airborne, we encountered icing conditions—a dangerous buildup of ice on the aircraft. With nightfall approaching, we decided it was safer to delay our journey and spend the night in Chicago.
In Chicago: An Unexpected Overnight Stop
At Chicago’s Gary International Airport (just south of the city), we encountered more twists:
- Aborted Takeoff:
As heavy snow began during preflight checks, we aborted our takeoff and safely returned to the ramp to wait out the weather. - A Brief Pause:
After a couple of hours monitoring weather updates and chatting with fellow pilots, conditions improved. However, as soon as we took off, we found ourselves navigating through layers of clouds. I carefully steered the plane between these layers to avoid heavy, icy clouds. - A Sunset Surprise:
Near Chicago, while maneuvering between cloud layers, we encountered a thick cloud layer that caused a bit of ice to form on the plane. I quickly descended below the clouds, which rewarded us with a spectacular sunset—a brief but unforgettable moment of beauty amid the chaos.
De-Icing: A Close-Up on Safety
Safety is paramount in flying, especially in winter:
- Overnight Icing:
After our overnight stay, during preflight checks, I discovered a thin layer of ice along the leading edges of the wing. Given the cold, even a slight accumulation was too risky. - De-Icing Experience:
I requested help from the FBO, and they brought out a de-icing truck typically used for larger jets. Watching the truck spray our small plane was both surreal and reassuring—the crew meticulously ensured every trace of ice was removed.
Homeward Flight: Flying Above the Clouds
With our plane safely de-iced and refueled, we set off for Crystal, MN:
- Ascending Above the Clouds:
This leg of the journey was remarkably different. As we gained altitude, we found ourselves soaring above the clouds, surrounded by clear blue skies. The view was nothing short of breathtaking. - A Gentle Descent:
To minimize our time in the clouds during landing, I coordinated with Air Traffic Control (ATC)—the professionals who guide pilots during flight—to delay our descent until we were near the airport. This ensured that the final approach was as safe and visually stunning as possible.
