Flying With Purpose: My Volunteer Journey to Midway and Beyond

Some flights test your skill. Some flights expand your world. And every now and then, a flight touches your heart in a way you didn’t see coming.
This was one of those flights.

A Bright Morning at Flying Cloud

I love early mornings at Flying Cloud. It’s where I learned to fly, where I’ve built some of my best aviation memories, and where my airplane waits patiently for its next adventure.
The air that morning felt crisp and refreshing — the kind of cool that wakes you up before your coffee does. With the sun rising and painting the ramp gold, I sat in the cockpit a moment longer just taking it all in.

The Midwest From Above

The flight toward Chicago unfolded like a patchwork quilt — fields of green, gold, and brown stitched together beneath the wing. The Mississippi River ribboned across the landscape, flashing blue in the sunlight.
There’s a special kind of peace in cruising above the world like that. Just the hum of the engine, the stillness of the sky, and a view that never gets old.

Taking on Midway

Landing at a major airport like Midway is… exhilarating. Even with years of flying behind me, stepping into big-airport airspace takes focus. You’re sharing the sky with big jets — the ones most people only see from the terminal windows.

My heart beat a little faster as the radio got busier. When the controller said, “Cleared to land,” a small wave of accomplishment washed over me.

Taxiing past airliners towering overhead made me feel both tiny and wildly proud. My little general aviation plane got the full VIP treatment as ground staff towed it into parking.

After lunch in Chicago, the mission continued.

Meeting the Passengers

The true heart of the journey began at Morris Airport, where I met two passengers needing to reach Mayo Clinic in Rochester. They had a long, difficult day ahead — and a long drive would’ve made it nearly impossible.

They greeted me with warm smiles, grateful handshakes, and questions about flying and my story. They were chatty, thankful, and genuinely curious. Their kindness made the mission feel even more meaningful.

This wasn’t just a ride.
This was a bridge to vital medical care.

For many patients, distance can be a barrier to receiving specialized care. Volunteer flights connect them to the medical help they need — safely, quickly, and at no cost.

A Sunset Arrival in Rochester

As we descended toward Rochester, the sky bloomed into shades of orange and pink. The cockpit glowed with sunset light, wrapping our quiet little cabin in warmth.

My passengers watched silently, taking it in. Sometimes the right moment needs no words.

I dropped them off at Mayo Clinic with well wishes and a full heart.

Homeward Bound Into the Night

By the time I took off again, night had settled across Minnesota. The world below twinkled like a map of tiny stars. Minneapolis welcomed me with its warm city glow — a beautiful reminder that home wasn’t far.

There’s something deeply reflective about ending a purposeful day in a quiet cockpit. The hum of the engine becomes a soundtrack, and suddenly you’re alone with your thoughts. I felt tired, grateful, and proud of the journey.

Experience the Journey

If you want to see the landing at Midway, hear the ATC clearance, and watch the day unfold from both cockpit and tail cameras, I documented the entire trip.

I’m Zef

Hey there, fellow aviation enthusiasts! I’m thrilled to welcome you to my corner of the internet where the sky is not the limit—it’s just the beginning.

As a skydiver, wingsuiter, and pilot, I’ve made it my mission to live life above the clouds. Whether I’m freefalling, soaring through the air in a wingsuit, or piloting an aircraft, the thrill of flight is my constant companion.

Blue skies and tailwinds.
