A Weekend in Memphis: Flying, Exploring, and an Unexpected Highlight

Last weekend, my wife and I decided to take a little adventure: flying our Cessna 210 down to Memphis for a quick weekend getaway. What started as a simple trip for food, music, and exploring the city turned into something even more meaningful.

Taking Off on a Cold Winter Morning

We departed from Flying Cloud Airport, just outside Minneapolis, on a crisp, sunny morning. The air was cold, but the skies were clear — perfect flying weather. As we climbed above the clouds, the world below slowly transformed: snowy white fields of Minnesota gave way to the brown farmland of the Midwest.

Smooth Skies and a Tailwind

The flight down was uneventful, thankfully, and our 10-knot tailwind made the journey faster than expected. Flying over the changing landscape, it was easy to forget that we were actually piloting a small plane ourselves — it felt almost magical to watch the world below shift as we soared southward.

Landing in Memphis and Exploring the City

We landed at Olive Branch Airport, and the FBO had our rental car ready — pre-booked, of course. After a quick lunch, we checked into our hotel and took a few hours to relax before heading out to explore Beale Street in the evening.

The music, neon lights, and energy of Beale Street were contagious. We grabbed dinner and then took a short walk by the river. It was cold, so we didn’t linger, but it was enough to feel the vibrant pulse of downtown Memphis.

The Unexpected Highlight: National Civil Rights Museum

The next morning, we visited the National Civil Rights Museum. Walking through the museum was a deeply moving experience. The exhibits take you through the struggle and resilience of Black Americans in the fight for equality.

Although our trip wasn’t planned around the museum, it ended up being the highlight of our weekend. The lessons and history we encountered there made us reflect on the continuing importance of fighting for equality — a reminder that these stories remain relevant today.

The Flight Home: Turbulence, Headwinds, and Sunset

Our return flight brought its own challenges. Winds were strong, gusting up to 20 knots on the ground, and once airborne, we encountered 40–50 knot headwinds at higher altitudes along with some turbulence. The Centurion handled it well, but it took focus to maintain course.

Eventually, we found smoother skies at 10,000 feet, allowing us to enjoy the final stretch of our journey. One of the highlights of the flight home was a breathtaking sunset above a layer of clouds — a serene contrast to the challenges of the headwinds. After 4.5 hours, we finally touched down back at Flying Cloud Airport, completing a memorable weekend.

Why Flying Makes Travel Special

Flying a small plane gives a unique perspective — it’s not just about getting from point A to point B, it’s about experiencing the journey itself. From the changing landscapes to the quiet thrill of navigating the skies, every mile feels alive.

This weekend reminded me that sometimes the most meaningful experiences aren’t what we plan for — like our visit to the Civil Rights Museum — but the ones we discover along the way.
